limited edition and one-of-a-kind dioramas
The Alphabet series is a project begun in 2007, a planned collection of twenty-six Aviaries. Each shadowbox is composed on a different theme, chosen for words that called up scenes from my memory or imagination. Tucked somewhere in each scene is this word, written out in full — sometimes a little hunting is required.
I originally expected that these would be very simple pieces, easy to build, the whole set of twenty-six comprising the finished work. But as each Aviary developed, they became more elaborate and time-consuming, and it became a surprisingly extended project. I finished it at last, in 2017. I'd always hoped to collect them in an Alphabet book, so that's my next project. I'm told this is called an Abecedarium, a word I now plan to use whenever I get the chance.
